“Dumbo”: Tim Burton restores wings to the Flying Elephant

Monsters, freaks and foreigners. All of Tim Burton’s films deal with difference and its acceptance by others.

So, it is understandable that “Dumbo”, Helen Aberson’s 1939 youth novel, adapted in 1941 by Disney for her third animated feature film after “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” (1937) and “Pinocchio” (1940), has fallen into his hands for a movie adaptation.

In an American circus from the 1920s, an elephant was born with gigantic ears that made it the laughing stock of the public. Separated from his mother, he is cared for by the children of a tame who discover that he flies thanks to his appendages. He is then reinstated, becomes a star, until a tycoon from a theme park makes him his star, without honoring his debt towards the elephant.

Walt Disney studios have enjoyed success in recent years by immersing themselves in the repertory of animated classic films and adapting the films to live cinema, the latest being: Dumbo. Burton is back in Disney’s fold after 2010 Alice In Wonderland, and tries a more grounded but still fantastic story. In the hands of writer Kruger, Dumbo’s story addresses the themes of family, self – confidence and the importance of animal rights.
